Groundwater Screening

Review mapped MCG parks, terrain, soil-texture support and regional groundwater context before choosing locations for field verification. This is a preliminary screening tool, not a construction approval or site-specific recharge estimate.

Mapped MCG parks1,782Across 36 spatial wards
Mapped building-free area445.7 haPark area after mapped building footprints are removed
Released intake screens1,624After groundwater and terrain support checks
Conditional six-hour range6,205-9,308 m3Fully supplied portfolio screen; not one-storm recharge
Use this tab to shortlist field checks. Click a park to review its mapped area, detention envelope, soil-cell support, groundwater distance and the next measurement required. Replace screening assumptions with surveyed levels, infiltration tests and seasonal groundwater observations before design.
Data boundary: MCG park polygons and municipal utility package supplied 05 June 2026; regional groundwater observations from the referenced CGWB NAQUIM material; soil texture from the nearest usable SoilGrids 250 m model cell. Exact source notes and limitations are documented in the report.

Test proposed drainage works

Scenario Lab

Choose a proposed work and compare it with the matching current-network result. FloodAstra reuses that baseline when rainfall, wet starting state, assets and physics are unchanged.

GPU
FloodAstra comparison runCurrent network and proposed work use exactly the same rainfall.
Step 1 of 3

Choose a flood location and test your response

The map shows locations where the baseline model reaches at least 15 cm. Select one to see whether intervention is appropriate; tools activate only after the hydraulic check passes or field impact is confirmed.

Meaningful field benefit only

Small numerical changes are excluded. A result must cross at least one threshold, must not worsen another known flood location, and must not materially increase downstream drain overflow.

Operational nowcast

Run New Rainfall

Paste or upload a rainfall hyetograph. FloodAstra validates it, prepares rainfall-specific external inflow, and can launch the current-condition D5 model when the DSS server is in operator-enabled mode.

Controlled launch
Public viewers can validate rainfall and inspect job status. GPU execution starts only when the server is run with --allow-operational-runs.

Rainfall Partition

Final 2D surface storage31,782,382 m³ | 80.5%

Water remaining on the modelled overland surface at the end of the run.

Explicit 2D open-boundary outflow5,169,064 m³ | 13.1%

Model-estimated water leaving the city boundary.

Horton infiltration loss3,011,635 m³ | 7.6%

Rainfall removed through the soil/LULC-adjusted Horton infiltration term.

Drain outfall discharge203,608 m³ | 0.5%

Water exported through the dynamic drainage outfall links.

Drainage node storage change257,331 m³ | 0.7%

Final drainage-node storage minus initial 20% filled drainage storage; negative means drains ended slightly below the initial fill.

Drain road inlet condition and drain return/backflow are shown separately as internal drainage-exchange diagnostics. They are not added as independent rainfall losses because water can move from surface to drain and then return to the surface.

Professional review use
This table is the first physics check: rainfall, infiltration, surface storage, drainage export, pump/park storage, open-boundary/domain outflow and residual are reported in one place. Large residuals should be investigated before interpreting maps.

Scenario comparison review

Rows use the same rainfall and report selected condition minus the current approved baseline. Storage, 15 cm area and persistence are the decision metrics; unusual maximum-depth spikes are retained only to flag drainage-exchange locations needing review.

No same-rainfall difference diagnostics are available for this page.
Diagnostic rule
If drainage appears worse only through a unusual local-depth spike while storage and threshold area improve, interpret it as local redistribution/backflow review rather than a citywide worsening signal. Check road inlet condition, local-to-main connectivity, downstream tailwater, outfall capacity, and whether the compared maps share the same city model.

Report and review viewsReview notes

Reviewer Notes

This review package is organised for drainage-readiness review. The primary baseline is current baseline condition; the other D-scenarios change drainage capacity, choking, dense-area debris blockage, or tailwater while keeping terrain, rainfall definition, and model workflow consistent for the selected rainfall.

Baselinecurrent baseline condition
Rainfall choicesJuly 2025 and 10-year double storm
Map conventionblue = floodwater only
Coordinate displayWGS84 lat/lon + EPSG:32643
How to read scenario differences
Decision comparisons prioritize final surface-water storage, area above operational depth thresholds, persistence exposure, and filtered local-depth change against the current baseline for the same rainfall. Crimson/magenta areas are locally deeper than the current baseline after filtering, teal areas are locally shallower than the current baseline, and unusual exchange-cell spikes are shown only as review flags.
How to read drainage layers
MCG-provided drainage dimensions are preserved where present. AIReSQ-inferred dimensions are labelled separately and are used only where the source attributes are incomplete. Drain-connection review lines highlight collectors whose connected local drains imply that the tagged section may need capacity confirmation.

Decision Use

  • Use Overview to confirm the active rainfall, scenario, terrain, drainage, ward boundaries, pumps, hotspots, and overflow/backflow watch points.
  • Use Key Statistics to check rainfall partition, outfall export, drain capture, drain return to surface, and water-balance closure.
  • Use Interactive Map or Ward Focus to inspect exact locations, lat/lon, depth, velocity, persistence, nearby MCG hotspots, drainage watch points, pump locations, and candidate receptor or recharge areas.
  • Use Flood Progression to review rainfall timing, depth growth, velocity context, and active overflow/backflow nodes.
  • Use Methods and Caveats before presenting conclusions. Outputs are screening-grade and depend on the quality of drainage attributes, invert levels, tailwater assumptions, terrain conditioning, and rainfall priors.
Scope statement
This is a professional proof-of-concept DSS for MCG review under the IITGN-AIReSQ-ARF-MCG ToR. It supports prioritisation and field verification; it is not an as-built drainage certificate, recharge approval, or liability-bearing design document.
City-agnostic flood software workflow

FloodAstra city flood modelling workflow

FloodAstra is the city-scale flood modelling and decision-support workflow developed by the IITGN-AIReSQ collaboration. Gurugram is the current reference deployment, but the workflow is designed so another city changes the data contract and configuration, not the model method.

Core engineStreet flow + drainage network
Compute targetHigh-speed local compute
Decision unitcity, ward, hotspot, asset
Output formDSS + maps + reports
01

City Evidence Intake

Study boundary, DEM/DTM/DSM, buildings, roads, LULC, soils, rainfall, drainage, manholes, outfalls, pumps, reported hotspots, and field metadata are loaded through a city configuration profile.

02

Data checks and harmonisation

CRS, units, geometry validity, raster alignment, clipping, drainage dimensions, slope direction, node connectivity, and source provenance are checked before any hydraulic run is allowed.

03

Terrain And Urban Feature Conditioning

A master terrain is selected, high-resolution context is assimilated conservatively, roads/buildings/LULC are converted to hydraulic modifiers, and drainage/inlet evidence is placed relative to the surface.

04

City Map And Drainage Network Preparation

The city is converted to an adaptive 2D grid with refined cells around assets, hotspots, roads, drains, and dense exposure zones, while 1D links, inlets, storage nodes, and outfalls are prepared.

05

Scenario And Rainfall Engine

Drainage readiness, siltation, choking, tailwater, pump operation, external inflow, antecedent fill, and hyetographs are expressed as named scenarios with reproducible assumptions.

06

Citywide Flood Simulation

FloodAstra simulates rainfall movement over terrain, interaction with drains and sewers, soil infiltration, road and building effects, inlets, backflow, outfalls, pumps and storage areas.

07

Diagnostics And Difference Maps

The run is checked for finite state, timestep behaviour, water accounting, drain capture/return/export, hotspot agreement, severity, and same city-model scenario differences against the selected baseline.

08

Decision Products

The software publishes stakeholder DSS pages, animations, interactive flood maps, ward focus summaries, drain and pump performance tables, candidate interventions, caveats, and PDF-ready action reports.

Minimum City Data Contract

  • Boundary and administration: city boundary, wards/zones, coordinate reference system, and official naming.
  • Terrain and urban form: DEM/DTM/DSM, buildings, roads, LULC, open spaces, parks, and critical facilities.
  • Drainage system: drains, sewers if storm-connected, manholes/inlets, outfalls, dimensions, material, desilting status, invert or slope evidence, and missing-data flags.
  • Hydrometeorology: historical events, design hyetographs, IDF assumptions, boundary inflows, receiving-water/tailwater assumptions, and antecedent wetness.
  • Operations and observations: pumps, sump capacities, reported nuisance points, past flood marks, road closures, monitoring points, and stakeholder priority locations.

Decision Outputs

  • Scenario comparison maps for depth, velocity, persistence, and selected-scenario minus baseline difference.
  • Drain performance tables showing initial fill, capture, overflow/backflow, and outfall export.
  • Hotspot agreement diagnostics comparing modelled hotspots with reported nuisance points.
  • Ward-level action packs with monitoring points, drainage watch nodes, pump/receptor options, recharge cautions, and caveats.
  • Audit-ready metadata covering source provenance, assumptions, units, CRS, scenario names, and validation checks.
Software principle
FloodAstra separates the city data package from the flood calculation engine. That allows the same modelling and decision-support workflow to run for Gurugram, Vijayawada, or another city after data screening, CRS/unit harmonisation, terrain conditioning, and drain connection review are completed.

Ward Reports

All 36 MCG wards have a ward-wise flood hotspot report in the latest simple JE-facing format. Each packet is created from approved FloodAstra release tables and includes a clean action map, PDF, editable DOCX, evidence JSON and ward/hotspot map assets where available. Use these as field-review drafts; site verification remains mandatory before works or procurement.

Top 200 Action Report

The current report ranks citywide action points using an India-context ANP feedback structure across hydraulic severity, population/property exposure, critical road/access, drain overflow/return evidence, public/reported evidence and actionability.

Top report points200
ANP Critical / Very High125
AHP Critical / Very High114
Critical road overlap145
High-density overlap37
Public evidence126
Pump/open receptor within 50 m3
Main-drain relief route within 50 m70
Sewer watch within 50 m56
Priority method
Expert-structured ANP-India screening index; feedback matrix set from Indian urban-flood operations logic, not stakeholder-calibrated pairwise ANP. Cluster weights: hydraulic severity 30%, population property exposure 19%, mobility critical access 18%, drainage system failure 17%, public reported evidence 8%, actionability 8%. ANP-India increases priority where hydraulic severity, dense exposure, critical road/access, drain overflow/return evidence, public evidence and near-term actionability reinforce each other. It remains a transparent screening index pending stakeholder pairwise calibration. AHP comparison and numerical score fields are retained in the downloadable CSV/GeoJSON for audit, but are not displayed in the stakeholder tables.
Solution-screening caveat
The 50 m pump/open-receptor fields are a screening calculation. Local flood volume is estimated from modelled maximum depth over active triangles within 50 m of the point. Time-to-fill divides screened receptor storage by the average local 50 m flood-volume rate over persistence; required pump capacities are simple 2 h and 4 h drawdown screens. These are not pump designs. Nearest sewer/sewage proximity is reported as a caution/watch field. Sewer links are not treated as stormwater relief routes unless a field-confirmed storm connection and outfall/STP operation are provided.

Drainage & Pumps

The full MCG storm/master drainage network is the parent layer; desilting/work-status lines are a subset overlay. Detailed MCG storm/sewer desilting links use the 100% scenario capacity factor. Remaining parent-network local components use 40% and remain storage/overflow-return only unless verified connectivity or the selected local-snap scenario connects them; actual MCG pumps are mapped but switched off.

Report and review viewsMethods and limitations

Methods

  • FloodAstra is the city-scale flood modelling workflow; this Gurugram DSS is the current reference deployment.
  • Citywide surface-flow calculation with stable time stepping and drainage interaction.
  • Soil infiltration, road and land-cover roughness, and building/open-space effects are included.
  • Rainfall forcing is selected from the top rainfall selector; the 10-year open-IDF case uses nearest-station GSDR-IDF return depths with an hourly alternating-block hyetograph. The double-storm case repeats that 12-hour burst immediately for a 24-hour compound event.
  • Dynamic drainage coupling uses head-limited road inlet condition, pipe/node storage, capacity-capped links, four trunk outfalls, and overflow/backflow return to the 2D surface when a drain node cannot accept more water.
  • The full MCG storm/master drainage layer is the parent drainage network; desilting/work-status lines are displayed as a subset/status overlay, and the detailed desilted storm/sewer KMZ networks are included as detailed pipe-network evidence where available. The current scenario matrix applies a 50 m local-drain connection rule where a parent-network drain can be defensibly linked to prepared trunk-drain nodes.
  • Drain dimensions carry explicit source metadata: MCG dimensions are preserved, AIReSQ-inferred dimensions are labelled by method, and connection checks whether collector capacity is defensible given connected peripheral drains.
  • All drainage source dimensions are normalized to SI before hydraulics: MM to m, CM to m, FT/FOOT/FEET to m, IN/INCH to m, unlabelled large size strings to mm, slopes as dimensionless m/m, and capacities as m3/s. The review folder includes a unit-check table for these checks.
  • The flow-direction review map follows prepared line orientation and slope-basis metadata for the parent drain network, separating surface-slope proxy arrows from default or uncertain arrows.
  • Actual MCG pump locations and capacities are mapped in the DSS. The current drainage scenario matrix keeps pumps switched off so drainage condition, blockage, desilting, and tailwater effects can be compared cleanly.
  • Pump-discharge and recharge screens are provided for planning context. Pump operation scenarios should be interpreted separately from this drainage-readiness matrix.
  • Random choking, dense-area debris blockage, MCG-hotspot-targeted poor drainage, and the D11 realistic monsoon-operations case reduce hydraulic capacity or change tailwater while preserving dynamic storage, overflow/backflow return, and outfall accounting.
  • Pump-discharge candidate areas are ranked from open/park/lowland polygons, current modelled flood state, non-building fraction, local terrain percentile, temporary detention freeboard, and proximity to pumps or impact hotspots.
  • Recharge candidates are screened from pervious/open land use, low building fraction, low contamination flag, modelled terrain/flood state, and CGWB/CGWA site visit requirements.
  • The recharge caution layer intersects screening-permissible recharge polygons with the nearest CGWB/NAQUIM 2023 groundwater monitor; candidates within 3 km and <=10 m bgl are flagged, with <=5 m bgl treated as high caution.

Caveats

  • Drain invert levels, chamber connectivity, blockage, and tailwater remain screening-grade until as-built or field survey data replace priors.
  • The drain-size source and connection-review maps are decision-support overlays: they show where the model used MCG dimensions, where it inferred dimensions, and where connected local drains suggest field review, not an as-built certification.
  • The flow-direction arrows are not surveyed invert proof. Amber arrows are explicitly default or uncertain and should be corrected when MCG provides invert levels, chamber connectivity, or verified downstream endpoints.
  • The 10-year design hyetographs are open-data screening estimates for Gurugram from the nearest New Delhi/Gurugram-region GSDR-IDF station; replace them with an approved MCG/IMD local IDF curve when available.
  • The drain overflow/backflow watch layer is deliberately high-confidence and screening-grade: it uses modelled water depth, persistence, and remaining final depth near hydraulic exchange points. It is not a statement that every marked point is a surveyed overflowing manhole.
  • Where source naming is available, the DSS shows MCG/source layer and asset IDs; otherwise the point is labelled as a model-derived drainage exchange point.
  • The current desilting network file did not provide a complete surveyed manhole inventory, so endpoint-derived nodes and exchange points are used where required.
  • The desilting/work-status subset is visual and scenario-evidence unless the exact asset-to-asset field mapping is confirmed; parent-network drains without verified connectivity are represented as local storage/overflow-return or scenario-specific connection links.
  • Hotspot-poor drainage is a scenario prior around reported MCG locations, not surveyed proof that every selected inlet or link is physically choked.
  • D11 is the most realistic current-operations screening case in this matrix, not a calibrated forecast; it combines moderate tailwater, dynamic Najafgarh storage, current partial desilting, and plausible blockages.
  • Park/open-area pump discharge is a screened temporary-detention option, not design approval. It requires field permission, outlet confirmation, water-quality controls, public-safety review, and operating rules before deployment.
  • Recharge permissibility is not granted by this DSS. It needs site water table, aquifer acceptability, infiltration testing, stormwater quality, pre-treatment, pollution setbacks, ownership and O&M clearance; direct wastewater injection is excluded.
  • CGWB/NAQUIM monitoring is a neighbourhood-scale screen, not a parcel-scale water-table survey. The caution layer must be replaced or confirmed with site WTL, seasonal high-water level, vadose-zone thickness, and water-quality tests before design approval.
  • Boundary inflow and outflow are modelled from available boundary priors and are screening-grade until upstream watershed hydrographs and surveyed receiving-water levels are supplied. Horton recovery/antecedent moisture remains simplified.
